Our History
Polycoat Products was established in 1979 in South El Monte, a city located in Los Angeles County. At that time, Polycoat was involved in manufacturing coatings used for pedestrian and vehicular decks and caulking tubes. The original deck was titled Polydeck 200 and utilized PC-220 and Polyglaze as their main components. Its main customers were located in Southern California but aspirations to sell on the West Coast were forming. Polycoat is proud to state that many of those customers that were present at that time still purchase material from Polycoat, highlighting our commitment to customer service. The original building encompassed approximately 3,000 square feet of warehousing and manufacturing, and a total of three offices. The manufacturing equipment included a main reactor of 350 gallons.

During the same time in the early 1980’s, Laxmi C. Gupta, current president of Polycoat Products, was working at a local manufacturing company where he was refining his polymer skills. After several years, Lax decided to put his entrepreneurship and business skills to work when he founded American Polymers Corporation, a California Corporation, and acquired Polycoat Products in December of 1984. His vision for Polycoat Products was to make it a leading manufacturer of polyurethane & polyurea coatings and elastomers. The first year was a difficult one, with many “challenges” to overcome, but this only served to strengthen the company’s focus on its strengths of manufacturing and development of superior coatings. During this time, Lax had a staff of eight employees, which included his wife and three children.

During the mid-1980’s, Polycoat solidified its place in the coatings market by expanding its product line and highlighting its commitment to producing a high quality coating, evidenced by the extensive testing performed and ratings awarded. By 1988, Polycoat had grown larger than its original home, and was forced to look for a building to “expand” into. Thus, Polycoat packed up its bags and employees and moved to its current home in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Polycoat is proud to announce that three employees from the initial plant are still working and prospering today, and signifies the family oriented culture at Polycoat.

The building in Santa Fe Springs was located on one acre and encompassed 5,000 square feet of office space (in two stories!), 2,000 square feet of research & laboratory space, 10,000 square feet of warehousing and 8,000 square feet for manufacturing. Polycoat quickly occupied this space with the purchase of a BASF plant. This included the purchase of numerous reactors and tanks, but was highlighted by a 9,000 gallon storage tank, which is still in use today. Polycoat has since expanded its manufacturing capabilities by installing 2,000 gallon reactors and is currently pursuing the upgrade to a 3,000 gallon reactor. We at Polycoat pride ourselves in our manufacturing plant and extend an invitation to loyal customers who want to visit.

Throughout the 1990’s, Polycoat has increased its market share and sought out new avenues for manufacturing. During this time Polycoat solidified its product line to its present day form which includes: Waterproofing Systems (fire rated & ICC Evaluated), Spray Elastomers, Industrial Maintenance Coatings, (NSF 61 approved), grouts, crack repair material, caulks, sealants, truck bed liners, cast elastomers, and tire fill products. In addition, Polycoat’s reach throughout the United States has increased and has also been fortunate to establish partnerships internationally. By the mid 1990’s, despite judicious use of space, Polycoat was growing larger than the current building was able to occupy. Polycoat at that time was in the process of building a new manufacturing plant, but fortunately the building next door became available. In the late 1990’s both buildings underwent extensive remodeling, resulting in our current capacity and look of Polycoat.

We at Polycoat are proud of our growth, commitment and development and recognize that this would not be possible without the support of talented individuals and companies who choose to represent and use our products. We thank all of our current and potential customers and hope that in the coming years we will be able to make coatings for many more applications.
